Motor thermal analysis

Motorlift has proprietary software to perform thermal analysis to support the design of high-performance, asynchronous and synchronous motors.

This process is useful because:

– Enables the behaviour of the motor to be simulated under real conditions, thus enabling an optimised design for real operating conditions to be created

– Allows optimisation not only of the motor, but also of the external structure, such as the housing, bearings, etc., making an important contribution to the very design of the machine in which the motor is inserted

The thermal analysis starts by providing as input the type and geometry of the motor, the housing present and the type of cooling (internal, external etc.). The model simulates reality very accurately, as very accurate data can be set, such as surface roughness, thicknesses and materials used, flow velocity, etc.

Having entered the engine structure and cooling system parameters, the software is able to simulate the engine’s operating temperature. This data is important as it is entered into the dimensioning process to obtain the behaviour under real operating conditions.

The software is also able to simulate dynamic thermal behaviour in the presence of operating cycles. For this simulation too, we can enter the cycle characteristics (time, intensity, number of cycles etc.) in full so as to have a result as close as possible to reality.

In the first image below you see the screen with the input data, in the second the actual simulation. In the first image below you see the screen with the input data, in the second the actual simulation.

CONCLUSION: this analysis tool is extremely important, especially for permanent magnet synchronous motors, as it can be used to verify that the operating magnet’s temperature is compatible even in the presence of onerous duty cycles.

It also helps in the design of high-performance, high-revolution motors that use temperature-sensitive devices or accessory components of a certain complexity (e.g. bearings, etc.).
